Since my first review of Vegetarian Era (Hougang), there has been massive changes. Now the stall has ready made dishes available, along with a host of brand new made to order dishes. For those that adored the previous dishes, fear not, dishes such as pumpkin mee java and lor mee are still available. I can't hide my disappointment that my beloved Hainanese beef noodle is gone, but I refuse linger onto that misery for long - Let us move onwards and upwards, and see how good the newly renovated menu is...
Vegetarian Era
Location: Blk 805, Yong Soon Coffee Shop
Contact: 96109123
Opening Hours: Daily 10.00am - 9.00pm
CLOSED DOWN - As of 15/04/2013
Along with having a glorious new menu, Vegetarian Era is also venturing
more deeply into the world of social media. The official Vegetarian Era facebook page is here,
those wanting more regular updates on the status of Vegetarian Era
should 'like' the page. Pictured to the left is a brief look at the
ready made dishes on offer. Henry Wang is especially skilled in vegan sauce making, hence many of the ready dishes are cooked in a sauce. All the food on offer at Vegetarian Era is egg, dairy, meat, onion and garlic free. Thus, completely 100% vegan.
For this review, I will be focusing chiefly on the new inclusions to the Hougang menu, starting with the Ipoh Curry Mee. Upon sampling this dish, it would be easy to mistakenly relate it to laksa. However, the nuances in this iphoh curry are quite different from laksa. Firstly, the flavour undertone is distinctly nutty, which is extremely delicious. Secondly, this dish is lacking the sharp spicy bite that laksa typically has. Considering I am not a big chilli fanatic, I certainly prefer this dish. The ingredients inside include beansprouts, tau kwa, tau pok and tau ke. A rich dish, which is not too overwhelming, nor too spicy.
Price: $3.00. 9/10
Since the menu overhaul happened, this Fuzhou Mee Pok has been incredibly popular with customers. Some customers may bemoan about the lack of vinegar inside, however, it is vital to acknowledge that traditional Fuzhou style mee pok does not include vinegar. The mock fish balls are exceptionally unique, with there being a minced meat stuffing inside each ball. The texture of the noodles was perfect, with them being very firm and bouncy. This dish is also served with a kelp based soup. Kelp is an ingredient (due to its cost) that will seldom be used in a side dish, so make sure to take the soup with this dish. This mee pok is one my personal favourites, that I've gobbled up countless times already.
Price: $3.00. 9/10
The next dish is the Hainanese Traditional Curry Rice. This dish was concocted as a hybrid of Western and Peranakan cuisine here in Singapore, and it is wonderful to see a vegetarian version now available. The highlight of this dish is the pork chop, which is not too greasy or salty. It is light and packed with flavour, with a moreish crunchy crust. As Chef Henry is a sauce expert, I had high expectations of the curry sauce, and luckily it didn't disappoint. It is quite a mild curry, that has the richness that almost resembles a Japanese style curry. The other ingredients on the plate were all cooked well, and worked in harmony with each other.
Price: $3.00. 9/10
Without a doubt, the star attraction from the menu change is this Hainanese Traditional Herbal Soup. This dish review marks one of the rare occasions where I am struggling for words to describe the flavour of this soup. The sensation one gets when consuming this soup is a very refreshing and cleansing one. The herbal flavour is definitely present, but neither too subtle nor overwhelming. The ingredients swimming majestically inside are sliced ginger, tau ke (dried beancurd sheets), coriander, tau pok, black fungus and mushroom stem mock mutton. The flavour of this soup really left me speechless. Instead of attempting to explain, I suggest it would be better for you to haul yourself down to Hougang and taste it yourself - You won't regret making the journey.
Price: $5.50. 10/10
Conclusion - My biggest gripe with Singapore vegetarian food is almost all vegetarian stalls in Singapore are selling virtually the same thing. The same dishes, cooked in the same way, with little imagination or creativity. The reason why I am so excited and impressed with Vegetarian Era is because these dishes bring a completely new and refreshing approaching to vegan food in Singapore. I especially recommend the herbal soup, but all dishes were exceptional in their own right. If you don't visit Vegetarian Era, then you are really missing out on some of the best vegan dishes that Singapore has to offer.

is the mock meat prepared by the cook or is ready made type?
ReplyDeleteHey anonymous,
DeleteAlmost all mock meat sold in Singapore eateries is ready made (usually from Malaysian suppliers). From what I know Vegetarian Era's mock meat is also ready made.
Luke
I recommend a vege fine dining at Johor Taman Molek called "Vegetalks", Just behind shell petrol station
ReplyDeleteHey anonymous,
DeleteThanks for that recommendation, I'll be sure to check it out!
Luke
Hi Luke,I tried the hainanese curry rice. is very nice but is too spicy. I remember hainanese curry rice should not be spicy at all for non vegetarian version and thought will be the same for vegetarian. Maybe you can let the boss henry knows and hopefully he can make it non spicy but those who like spicy can add in chilli separately? If is non spicy then will be best. thks.

Hey Vicky,
DeleteThanks for your comment!
Surprised to hear you thought it was spicy. Personally, I've eaten the curry rice from there probably over 30 times now, every time the curry barely has any spice at all. The sauces/curry that are combined to make curry rice all have almost no chilli or spice at all inside, these sauces are all made the same every day...
...So with that being said, haha, I really don't know what else to say. I am someone that doesn't particuarly like spicy food either, and this dish (from my experience) has virtually no spice at all inside.
My guess is probably the eggplants have the most chilli (although not much either) - Maybe if you want to lower the spice even more, then replace the eggplant with another dish. The staff allow a lot of flexibilty, so will have no problem with you changing it with another ingredient! :)
Hope that helps!
Luke
I think there is chilli inside the curry. I didn't get the spicy eggplant because is spicy. First few mouths is not spicy but the more I eat the more it get spicy. maybe you can feedback to the boss? thks.
ReplyDeleteVicky
Hey Vicky,
DeleteHaha, ok sure I'l do that.
Have you tried the other dishes at Veggie Era Hougang? What are your thoughts on them? :)
Luke
thks and hope is totally spicy free the next time I visit. I tried the other side dish of the economical rice like the fried veg. sweet and sour meat, which is very nice. mee pok not bad. hope can have the chicken rice added which I am sure will be welcomed by all.
ReplyDeletevicky
Hey Vicky,
DeleteThe Vegetarian Era chicken rice can be found at their Ang Mo Kio outlet. I don't think they will bring it over to Hougang as well, because Henry likes to have each outlet having completely different and unique dishes - So each stall have completely different dishes! :)
Luke
Hi Luke, sad to know that hougang stall is closing. Can you pass this suggestions to Henry?
ReplyDelete1. I ate the hainanese curry rice again and I confirm there really has chilli and hope that my suggestion to make the gravy non spicy at all but customer can add in chilli themselves?
2. since the curry rice will be added into amk stall, so hopefully that this dish can be added to every stall and make it his signature dish, including the new stall at telok kurau?
3. I am working in marine parade and this place really lack of vegetarian stalls, hopefully henry can consider opening one maybe nearby parkway parade coffeeshop/mkt so that will not be expensive?
4. Hope henry can think of dishes which cater to customer who don't take chilli at all too. I really like the hainanese curry rice but really is spicy to me. (customer who want can then add in chilli themselves).
Thks.
Vicky
Hey Vicky,
DeleteThanks for the comment.
Haha, I never denied that there was chilli in the curry rice. My position was there is barely any chilli inside. It can sometimes be difficult to please everyones preference - Some people (like yourself) want absolutely no chilli at all inside, others want a little bit, others want more chilli. And considering the curry sauce is pre-made in bulk, it would mean changing the entire curry. Definitely we all have our own preference, and like I said, I also don't like spicy food. But I would imagine 99.9% of people who eat this curry rice, they won't find it spicy.
I agree with you that Marine Parade really needs more vegetarian options. I guess the new Telok Kurau outlet still might be a bit too far from Parkway. I will pass on your idea to him, who knows, in the future there may be a Vegetarian Era close to PP!
Appreciate the comment, Vicky!
Luke
Thanks for passing all my messages to him and can you also let him know that the balls in the meepok are "over bouncy" till is too firm. Ya that's why I suggest to have chilli for ppl who like spicy to put in themselves. Ha ha hopefully there will be one close to PP soon and not too future loh.
