Fu Xiang Vegetarian Food - Harbourfront

Vegetarians living in Singapore should be well aware of the woeful meat-free options available at Vivo City/Harbourfront. It is really disappointing that such a huge shopping centre doesn't have one single vegetarian eatery. With that being said, there is a vegetarian stall close by the shopping centre, which could provide a viable option for those who are finding themselves desperately looking for anything vegetarian in that area. Therefore, Fu Xiang Vegetarian Food, which is located in Seah Im Food Centre, will be my focus for this review. You can get to this hawker centre by taking Exit A, from Harbourfront MRT. From there it is only a 2 minute walk.

Honestly speaking, Fu Xiang doesn't really have a whole lot to chose from, and really, it is just a typical vegetarian hawker centre stall. But, the dishes are very cheap - Such as this White Rice & Dishes. The dishes I opted for was mock meat and beansprouts. No complaints on the rice or the dishes, although there really was not many dishes to choose from. The black pepper mock meat was particularly juicy and flavourful. As I mentioned, price wise Fu Xiang certainly does offer dirt cheap dishes, which is great for those not wanting to pay the exorbitant food prices in Vivo.

Price: $2.00. 6/10

Fu Xiang is also offering a couple of freshly cooked dishes. The one which tantalized me the most was the Fried Hor Fun. Overall, I found the soup/gravy to be quite tasty, with welcome additions of mushrooms and beancurd. Unfortunately, what I felt the dish was lacking was the aroma of the wok, which I so desperate long for whenever eating dishes such as hor fun. Therefore, with this crucial flavour being missing, I did feel like the dish was simply incomplete. The texture of the noodles also felt a little tough and rubbery.

Price: $2.50. 5/10

Conclusion - Harbourfront is truly a sorry place for vegetarian food, all we can do is keep our fingers crossed that more options will spring up in the near future. For now, Fu Xiang represents the closest geographical vegetarian eatery to Vivo City, and therefore is the best option for those wanting a 100% vegetarian eatery. For those wanting places with a very strong amount of vegetarian dishes (but not 100%), then I would recommend Pangat Authentic Indian Cuisine, which can be found in the Vivo City Kopitiam (#B2-39).

  1. I love Vivo City!
There are actually a number of veggie options:
    - Food Republic has thunder tea rice and veg rojak
    - Marche has delicious mushroom crepes, rosti and a yummy salad and grilled vegetable bar
    - There's veg tao sar piah in the basement by little red house (xiao hong dian)
    - The basement also has tracy's juice culture, subway, thai express (has a veg menu)
    - Giant Hypermart sushi!
And the restaurants in vivo have veg options too! Eg; Modesto's pizza and pasta, Serenity's Paella
    Hope this helped :)

  2. Hey anonymous,

Thanks for those suggestions. I actually try to focus my reviews on 100% vegetarian eateries. As, taking those places you mentioned as an example, whether these dishes are truly vegetarian is something I would question. Usually places such as these cook in pots and pans that were used for meat. So, therefore, cross-contamination is rife - Hence, why I try to avoid eating at places non-100%.

But I think your suggestions are useful for non-strict vegetarians, who are desperately looking for anything! Haha.

    I appreciate the feedback!

  4. I agree that it is so frustrating that such a big shopping mall and a tourist attraction does not have a single 100% vegetarian stall. disappointing and unacceptable. O: anyway thanks for your post! I have always felt the same way about harbour front too. I usually eat the doughtstick and other snacks from the vegetarian 'yong shun you tiao' stall. They sell soya milk as well. However the fried food can be quite heaty and oily.

  6. Hey Ele,

Thanks for visiting and glad that you like the site!

    Hey anonymous,

I agree with you entirely. Vivo is not alone in neglecting the vegetarian community. Other huge shopping malls, such as NEX (in Serangoon) don't have any vegetarian options. I can only imagine the uproar if these shopping centres didn't have any Muslim stall...So why are vegetarians expected to settle for this? We can only hope this changes in the future.

  7. Yes I agree. It is not easy to be a vegetarian. I have been one for more than 10 years since I was young. It is not easy to get people to understand us as well. It has become harder and harder as I grow up. Not to mention shopping malls, even govt schools does not have vegetarian stall. I hope to see more changes in the future as well. (: Cheers to all vegetarians.

  8. Hey anonymous,

Yes, it is disappointing. I am someone who works in schools, and so far all the schools I have visited, rarely any have anything vegetarian available. Progress is slow, but hopefully the future for vegetarian food will be brighter.

With that being said, comparing Singapore with Western countries, I am glad I live in Singapore and have lots of nice vegetarian food. Back in my home country, to find a 100% vegetarian eatery is impossible.

So, could Singapore be better for vegetarians? Definitely! But it is still much better than most countries in the world.

  13. "Oh, a meal is so cheap here!" was the usual remark made by my European tenants when they paid $4-5 for a lunch. "Huh? It is not cheap. Portions are shrinking, have you noticed now you get only a few slivers of meat for chicken rice at most eateries?" was my retort. It's therefore heart-warming to see you have become more heartleander and Singaporean in your mindset than quite a few of my Singaporean friends. Welcome and always look forward to your reviews!

  14. Hey GreenCoal,

Haha, well, I am probably the most thrifty ang moh you will ever meet, so I don't like paying prices that I shouldn't for anything!

I agree with you though, Westerners who come to Singapore will consider $4-5 for a dish quite cheap. Firstly, because they don't know Singaporean food, and don't know what is good or bad value. Secondly, it is cheap if they convert it back into the currency of their home country!

Thanks, hopefully my future reviews continue to be enjoyable for you!
